The Macallan 77 Year Old is one of the oldest single malts ever officially released by any Scotch whisky distillery. First casked in 1945 — the year the Second World War ended — this whisky spent 77 years in sherry seasoned oak before being released in 2022. As part of the Red Collection, it sits alongside some of the most extraordinary aged expressions in the history of Speyside, each selected from specific casks that the distillery's Whisky Mastery Team spent years identifying and protecting for this purpose.

At 77 years of age, this is a whisky in a category of its own. The angels' share alone at this age is an astonishing testament to the quality of the original cask and the care with which the liquid was monitored. The presentation includes original Javi Aznarez artwork, and the box and packaging are as considered as the whisky inside.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A harmonious bouquet of citrus fruits — orange peel and grapefruit — alongside warm baking spices and an antique, resinous quality that speaks directly to nearly eight decades in sherry wood. A whisper of tobacco leaf and old leather add depth and gravity.

Palate: Extraordinary complexity and integration at this age — the fruit, the wood, the spice and the distillery character have had nearly 80 years to find a perfect equilibrium, and they have. Dried orange and dark chocolate lead, with a saline quality and an almost contemplative, unhurried profundity.

Finish: Extended beyond conventional description — a whisky of this age does not simply finish; it meditates. Dried fruit, antique oak and warm spice linger long after the glass is empty.

  • The Red Collection as a series carries extraordinary global recognition; the 77 Year Old is its headline expression, and a bottle in perfect condition with original packaging is as significant a whisky acquisition as exists
