Miltonduff was established in 1824 on the site of the old meal mill of Pluscarden Abbey, about ten kilometres southwest of Elgin in Speyside. It has spent most of its life as a backbone malt — reliably supplying character to blends, particularly J&B Rare. The "Glenlivet" suffix is the old regional designation that Speyside distilleries once appended to their names. A Firkin is a small cask — roughly 40 litres — and the numbers reflect it: approximately 85 bottles at cask strength of 51.9%. Firkin releases are among the most concentrated expressions a distillery can produce.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Bonbons and vanilla up front — classic Miltonduff sweetness — with mulched woodland, orange zest and warm earthiness from the tight wood contact. Some gentle blackberry in the background.

Palate: Cask strength arrives with conviction but without aggression. Sweet wood spice, dried fruit and grassy freshness, all concentrated by the small cask maturation.

Finish: Medium-long, warming — oak tannins and lingering earthy sweetness.

Why This Bottle Is Worth Bidding On

  • Firkin releases yield perhaps 80-90 bottles at most — you're buying something most collectors never even see
  • Cask strength Miltonduff from Cadenhead's is genuinely rare; the distillery rarely appears in independent bottlings at this strength
  • The old "Glenlivet" suffix adds historical interest to an already scarce bottle
