Glen Albyn 42 Year Old 1980 – Gordon & MacPhail The Dram Takers | Single Refill Sherry Puncheon #2327 | 51.1% ABV | 75 Bottles | 70cl
Glen Albyn stood on the banks of the Caledonian Canal in Inverness for over 130 years, distilling quietly and almost entirely for the blending trade before its doors closed in 1983 and the buildings were demolished three years later. It rarely appeared as a single malt during its lifetime, and genuine aged releases from this distillery are among the hardest things to find in independent bottling. Gordon & MacPhail — who had been filling casks at Glen Albyn for decades — selected single refill sherry puncheon #2327 for their revived Dram Takers series, a range created to release the most extraordinary long-aged casks in their historic warehouses. Distilled in 1980 and bottled in 2023 at 42 years old, it yielded just 75 bottles at 51.1% ABV.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Blueberry and ripe red apple complement sultanas, with toasted hazelnuts leading to citrus zest and toffee. Deep mahogany in the glass, with dried fruit and dark chocolate building underneath — rich, layered, and unhurried.
Palate: Strawberry liquorice and stewed plums lead the way, with the refill sherry puncheon adding concentrated dark fruit depth without overwhelming the distillery's own Highland character. Complex and beautifully integrated at cask strength.
Finish: Long, fruited, and warming — dried fruit, toffee, and gentle oak spice fading slowly with real dignity.
Why This Bottle Is Worth Bidding On
- Glen Albyn has been gone for nearly 40 years and was never a significant single malt producer during its lifetime — genuine 42-year-old releases from this distillery in any format are exceptionally rare and becoming rarer with every bottle opened.
- Just 75 bottles from a single cask, bottled by Scotland's oldest independent bottler from a cask they filled and have been watching for over four decades — this is exactly the kind of provenance that the whisky world's most serious collectors seek out.
- The Dram Takers revival series from Gordon & MacPhail has attracted significant collector attention since its launch, and the Glen Albyn expression is widely regarded as one of the standout releases in the range, combining extreme rarity with a distillery that simply cannot produce another drop.
