Benromach 35 Year Old Very Rare | 1981 Vintage | Pre-Closure Era | First-Fill Sherry Casks | 43% ABV | Wooden Case | 70cl
Benromach has one of the most unusual histories in Speyside whisky. Founded in 1898, the distillery was mothballed in 1983 — just two years after this whisky was distilled — and remained silent until Gordon & MacPhail, who had purchased the site in 1993, restarted production in 1998. The 35 Year Old Very Rare is distilled entirely from that pre-closure era: a 1981 vintage that predates the 15-year silence and represents a chapter in the distillery's history that can never be added to. Matured in first-fill sherry casks, the packaging pays deliberate homage to the original distillery — the dark-grained wooden washbacks, the stills, and the lime-washed walls — presented in a bespoke bottle and wooden case. One of the rarest official releases Benromach has ever produced, released in limited quantities in early 2016.

Tasting Notes
Nose: Sophisticated and layered — delicate orange blossom, sultanas, honey, ginger, and very ripe honeydew melon, with cinnamon, cloves, beeswax polish, and warm beehive notes characteristic of long-matured Speyside sherry cask whisky.
Palate: Smooth, rich, and old — peaches, raisins, stewed pear, and soft baking spices. Sweet and slightly spicy, with a gentle charred oak edge threading through. Remarkably elegant at 43% ABV.
Finish: Long and warming — aged marmalade zest, oak sap, dry tobacco, and a hint of dark fruits fading slowly across a dignified, unhurried exit.
Why This Bottle Is Worth Bidding On
- Distilled in 1981, just two years before Benromach's closure — this is pre-shutdown spirit from a distillery that spent 15 years silent. No new 1981 Benromach will ever exist, and official distillery bottlings from this era are exceptionally rare.
- One of the rarest expressions Benromach has ever officially released, presented in a bespoke bottle and wooden case with packaging designed to honour the original distillery aesthetics — a bottle with genuine heritage and story.
- As the distillery's profile has grown significantly since reopening, collector demand for pre-closure Benromach distillate has steadily increased. A 35-year-old official distillery bottling in perfect condition is a compelling acquisition.
