In July 2013, Cadenhead's bottled a single cask of Ardbeg distilled in 1993 — pulling it from the barrel at nearly 20 years of age and delivering it to the world at 57.9% ABV, completely unaltered. Three hundred and twelve bottles. The 1993 vintage comes from a period when Ardbeg was producing only part-time under Hiram Walker's ownership, meaning production runs were infrequent and casks from this period are genuinely scarce. When Cadenhead's managed to secure one and bring it out at full cask strength, it was the kind of independent bottling that whisky hunters remember.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Powerful and maritime — iodine, tar and sea smoke with antique leather and dried tropical fruit. High ABV amplifying everything: green apple, peach skin, warm caramel, faint floral.

Palate: Thick and oily. Intense peat and camphor wrapped around butterscotch, honeyed malt, dried mango and papaya.

Finish: Long and complex — coastal peat smoke unwinding gradually. Vanilla, charred wood and a final burst of maritime brine.

Why This Bottle Is Worth Bidding On

  • Just 312 bottles exist — one of the most limited Ardbeg expressions available at auction, from a single cask at full cask strength
  • The 1993 vintage comes from a period of intermittent Ardbeg production, making stocks from this era genuinely rare historically
  • At 57.9% ABV, this is Ardbeg completely unfiltered and uncut — as close to drinking directly from the cask as you can get
